Adelaide from a Newcomer's Point of View
We've been in Adelaide, Australia for approximately 4 months now. And I've made it a point to reflect from time to time by writing in my journal. I'm so grateful for all the blessings and prayers that have already been answered. Indeed, God is good. But I'll save the deep thoughts for my journal and share with you random thoughts about Adelaide, Australia from this newbie's point of view.
- Words/Vocabulary. Although I've already known the common words with different meanings from what some parts of the world are used to, I realized that most of my international friends didn't understand a whole lot of them. Like:
Nickers - Underwear
Jumper - Sweater
Flannel - Face towel
Serviet - Napkin/tissue
Trolley - Push cart
Lift - Elevator
Chips - Fries
- Malls and most establishments close at 5 pm. Originally from a country where malls are huge and close at 9-11 PM and even have midnight or 24 hour sales, I really wondered, what is there to do after 5?? It gets frustrating especially when you need something from the mall after 5 PM but you get used to it. Thankfully, a lot of restaurants stay open past 5.
- Patronize Australia. I have to say, my shoppaholic eyes did not recognize the majority of the brands here. Apparently, Australia is big on patronizing their own products and minimize entry of imported brands. Genius move for their local industry, really. Coming to love all things Aussie now!
- Authentic food from different cuisines. Because of how multi-cultural Adelaide is, there is also a good selection of restaurants that specialize in food from different countries. Originally being from Cebu, Philippines, I am an absolute food lover who used to dine out every week. I didn't really expect to have too many options here but surprise, surprise. I found out that Chinese food and Indian food (and so on) taste way more authentic and delicious here simply because the people cooking them are really from those countries.
- Right hand drive. I've been driving using a left hand drive vehicle for almost 10 years and I am just not ready to drive on the streets here. I'll need a little bit more time..
- How ya going? "Hi! How are you/how ya going?" is a common form of greeting and I still get too lazy having to answer "Good. How are you?" when you know the person's going to simply say, "Good, thanks" too. Which brings me to my next thought..
- People are really nice and honest! While in most places, you can have valid trust issues and assume that people can/will cause harm to you, it's the opposite here. Basically, you assume that people are nice and honest unless proven otherwise. Of course you still find people who are exceptions, but being nice seems to be the norm here. And that's a really good thing.
- Grow old with you. I literally see old couples holding hands every single day. At the mall, at the bus stop, in the hospital. I watch them and I see that they're still so happy and in love - and that they're the best of friends. They say Adelaide is where old people choose to retire. And I can see why. It's calm, clean and life is well-paced here. And since I have the person I'm going to grow old with, maybe we'll grow old here too. ;)
On me: Top and jeans- Forever 21, boots - Call It Spring, Jacket - Lyla & Co x Big W |
On him: Jumper - Basic, Shirt - H&M, Jeans - Levi's, Shoes - Nike Flyknit Chukka |
Always,
Jeanne

I went to Australia in 2010 for a people to people trip and had a blast! The people there ARE really nice and would always strike up a conversation with you. I loved this one store that was in most malls but I literally can't remember the name of it for the life of me (It started with a C ???) Anyway! Australia is beautiful and I would love to go back one day :)

I love reading about different countries's cultural differences. My cousin lives in Aussie and whenever she visits we have a little giggle about our language gap. You look darling in the couple picture.

Glad you are enjoying Australia! I have been to a few different countries (although not many) and I have to agree that Australians are the friendliest bunch! :) Plus I do love buying local and Australian where I can - makes sense as I want to ensure that my baby has a job locally when he grows up, and it's better for the environment! :)

Haha this girl I know in London asked for "pants" at a store and got sent to the panties section lol. So funny how different English is in different parts of the world. But in the US we also say "Hi, how are you?" as a greeting, what do they say in other places??

What a lovely round up and how nice about the retired romantic couples. We have left hand drive in the UK, so it took me time to get used to driving on the right when I lived in France

ReplyDeleteI had no idea before moving your 'malls' were even open occasionally for 24 hours when sales were on - that's incredible! Here in the UK, the 5pm closing time also applies. I hope you're settling in well :)
