Port Princess Dolphin Cruise
When Scoopon offered a deal for a "magical 2 hour dolphin cruise with lunch and a drink on Port River" at a very affordable price, who was I to resist? At only $49 for 4 people, it was a perfect idea for a double date.

We went in the middle of March on a very hot day and we were booked in for a 1:30 PM cruise (other options include 11 AM and 3:30 PM). The cruise departs from the front of Fishermen's Wharf, Commercial Road, Port Adelaide, SA 5015.
I think I read somewhere that the best time to go on a dolphin cruise is between February-April but the truth is, a dolphin cruise will NOT be able to guarantee you of dolphin sighting.
What to Expect
I came prepared with low expectations as I had already read some negative feedback regarding the cruise online but I went determined to have fun anyway. Unfortunately, those negative comments were on point, but I had fun anyway!

For lunch, we had a choice between
chicken/beef schnitzel, calamari, battered fish, chicken nuggets, and
vegetable spring rolls with a side of chips and salad, plus a softdrink. While the food
was ordinary, I can't complain as it was considerably cheap. However,
with the size of their preparation area, they could only serve a few
tables at a time. We ended up getting our meals around 30 minutes before
the cruise ended. We finished just in time for the staff to rush in
cleaning up (to prepare for the 3:30 PM cruise, I presume).
The lower deck was small enough for us to clearly see outside the windows even though we weren't seated right next to it. Before the boat left the dock, we saw 2 dolphins swimming. They weren't playing or jumping and they didn't appear again for the rest of the cruise. Although that was disappointing, I was happy enough to have at least spotted SOMETHING. Lol. As the cruise continued on, there was an "informative on-board commentary", which was not audible at all over the poor sound system. Needless to say, I did not learn any information from the commentary.

Normally at around $8 per person without food, we availed of this cruise through Scoopon at a good bargain.

The Verdict
Like I said, I came with low expectations so I didn't mind the simple food, poor sound system and only 2 minor dolphin sightings. I personally enjoyed having lunch on a short cruise with good friends. For tourists who are only visiting Adelaide with limited time, I would suggest to skip this altogether and include other places in your Travel Adelaide itinerary instead. But for locals who are looking for a different activity, I personally felt that this is a lovely way to spend an afternoon with friends and family. Spend the rest of your day roaming around Fishermen's Wharf afterwards and maybe find a gem of a buy or two.

I think I went on a similar short cruise before too. But the one I went on was not as nice as yours! There wasn't any food, and it was so windy that day the boat was rocking a lot. I agree, this kind of short cruise is a great way to spend a couple hours with friends. Thanks for sharing!

I once went on a whale watching trip in Cape Cod with my husband, and we saw quite a few whales!:) It was so much fun; they were playing and weren't afraid of the boat at all.
